Less than truckload (LTL) shipping is a freight mode designed for shipments that don't require a full, dedicated 53-foot trailer. Instead of paying for an entire truck, LTL shippers pay only for the space their freight occupies, and their freight is consolidated onto a trailer with other shippers' goods heading in the same direction. This space is measured as linear feet, and the weight and zip code pairing are all variables in what constitutes the freight rate.
LTL is typically the right choice, for shippers, when your shipment falls between 150 and 15,000 pounds, spans 1 to 6 pallet spaces, and doesn't require exclusive use of a truck. For larger volumes that can fill a trailer, a volume LTL quote can be sourced. Volume LTL quotes can be pulled automatically from Viewpoint TMS via API to ensure you are opting for the best most of transportation. And when you need an entire dedicated load then full truckload (FTL) is usually more cost-effective.
LTL freight pricing is determined by several factors: the freight class of your goods (based on density, stowability, handling, and liability), the origin and destination zip codes, weight and dimensions, and any accessorial services required such as liftgate delivery, inside pickup, or residential handling.
