Shipping Process

As the shipper, you play a crucial role in the shipping process. Your involvement is indispensable; the process hinges on your initiation by placing an order and scheduling a shipment, setting the gears in motion for other parties to proceed. When routing international freight, shippers are also referred to as exporters in the industry, representing the businesses responsible for exporting goods.

Manufacturing Perspective

Our shipping services extend to niche manufacturing initiatives such as prototype, JIT, and lean manufacturing deliveries. We also offer additional conveniences like inside delivery and debris removal upon request. Trust TLI for reliable, tailored solutions to meet your shipping needs.

6 Step Domestic Shipping Process

  1. Client Order Submission: The process commences when the shipper's client submits an order that will need transportation services to be realized.
  2. Order Fulfillment and Packaging: Upon receiving the order, the shipper fulfills it by pulling their inventory, and safely packaging the goods for transportation.
  3. Logging into TLI's TMS System (ViewPoint TMS): Using TLI's Transportation Management System (TMS), known as ViewPoint TMS, the shipper's client logs in to compare an aggregate of carrier freight rates.
  4. Creating Bill of Lading: Within ViewPoint TMS, the shipper's client generates a bill of lading (BOL) detailing the shipment's specifics.
  5. Automatic Tendering to Carriers: ViewPoint TMS automatically tenders the shipment to carriers selected for transportation based on the shipper's predefined bill of lading criteria.
  6. Enabling Tracking: Once auto-tendered to the carrier, ViewPoint TMS facilitates tracking of the shipment through its transit till delivery.

Optional Manufacturing Freight Services

(Optional) Comparing Quote Against Carrier's Invoice: Upon delivery, the quote initially booked is compared against the carrier's invoice. If discrepancies arise, TLI's freight audit team rectifies them accordingly.

(Optional) Handling Freight Claims: In case of transit damage, TLI manages the freight claim process on behalf of the shipper's client, ensuring prompt resolution.

(Optional) Extra Cargo Capacity Insurance: If necessary, TLI arranges additional cargo capacity insurance to mitigate risks associated with transportation.

Inbound Vendor Freight Routing Process

Inbound vendor routing operates similarly to outbound shipping processes, offering two primary options for coordination:

  1. Vendor Portal Access: The shipper's vendor gains access to a designated portal within the Transportation Management System (TMS). Here, they input shipment details and route the goods accordingly. This method allows for direct involvement from the vendor in managing the transportation of goods to the shipper.
  2. Shipper-Initiated Routing: Alternatively, the shipper can take charge of inbound routing by sending purchase orders (POs) to their vendors along with instructions to contact TLI for routing assistance. TLI, leveraging its expertise and network, identifies the least costly provider and ensures smooth delivery of inbound raw materials to the shipper's location.

In both scenarios, the shipper benefits from comprehensive tracking & reporting capabilities, enabling them to monitor the progress of inbound freight shipments from origin to destination. This streamlined process ensures efficient handling and timely delivery of essential raw materials to support the shipper's procurement operation.

7 Step International Shipping Process

  1. Requesting Quotes and Ordering Goods: The process kicks off when a shipper's customer initiates an order for goods, typically by requesting a quote. The shipper responds with a Proforma Invoice, laying the groundwork for the shipment.
  2. Organizing Export with TLI: If strategically partnering with a 3PL, the 3PL takes charge of coordinating the shipment and collecting the goods. This entails preparing crucial shipping and customs documents.
  3. Booking Freight with a Carrier: Armed with the necessary documentation, the forwarder secures a slot with a carrier to transport the goods. Expert 3PL's like TLI excel in only partnering with vendors who schedule optimal routes well in advance.
  4. Transporting Goods by Freight: With a booking secured, the goods embark on their journey via road, sea, or air. Depending on the Incoterms agreed upon, either the shipper or the buyer's forwarder arranges transportation.
  5. Processing Goods through Customs: Before exiting the country of origin, the goods must undergo customs clearance at the border. Ensuring all required documents are in order facilitates smooth approval, allowing the goods to leave the country timely.
  6. Import Clearance in the Destination Country: Upon arrival at the destination country, the goods undergo import clearance. Proper documentation is essential to support the clearance process. Import duties and taxes may apply upon entry.
  7. Transporting Goods to the Importer: The final step involves the inland leg of transportation, involving delivering the goods to the customer. The agreed Incoterms specify the party responsible for this stage of the process.
