I-95 Connecticut to close

Connecticut's Governor, Ned Lamont, announced Thursday that a significant transportation route, I-95, connecting New England and New York will face closure for several days. This decision comes in the aftermath of a tanker fire that inflicted damage upon a bridge spanning Interstate 95.  The incident occurred during a three-vehicle collision involving a tanker truck carrying gasoline, which erupted into flames along the I-95 in southwest Connecticut.

As a result, the closure of this vital north-south highway has led to extensive traffic congestion. Governor Lamont assured the public that despite the severity of the accident, occurring at 5:30 a.m. in Norwalk, there were fortunately no reports of serious injuries. However, the structural integrity of the bridge has been compromised due to the crash.

Please note that regional carriers have informed TLI of anticipated delays to shipments currently in transit. We are actively monitoring the situation and will issue updates as necessary. Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling has announced the closure of the city's schools on Friday, with uncertainty regarding their reopening on Monday.

He encourages local employers to consider facilitating remote work for employees on Friday or utilizing the MetroNorth commuter rail system. Authorities have confirmed the addition of extra trains to the rail line. Despite the bridge being less than a decade old, the extent of damage caused by the ignited gasoline beneath its structure was significant. The steel components experienced overheating and deformation as a result

On Thursday evening, substantial equipment was mobilized to Connecticut in preparation for the demolition, slated to commence around 3 a.m. on Friday. Governor Lamont indicated that the demolition process could extend for 24 hours or more. Following the demolition, there may be a requirement for repaving the roadway before it becomes accessible again.
