NMFC Code Lookup

What Are NMFC Codes?

NMFC codes—standing for National Motor Freight Classification—are a standardized system used in North American LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) freight to classify commodities for shipping. The system helps determine how freight is rated and billed by categorizing based on these four key factors:

  • Density: weight per cubic foot
  • Handling: how much care or special equipment the shipment needs
  • Stowability: how easily the item can be stored with other freight
  • Liability: risk of damage, theft, or special precautions required

Commodities are sorted into one of 18 classes, from Class 50 (low cost, easy to ship) to Class 500 (higher cost, complex or riskier to ship). NMFC also includes packaging rules, claims, and billing standards

What Changed in July 2025?

On July 19, 2025, a major update—Docket 2025-1—went into effect, marking one of the most significant shifts in NMFC history. The classic 11-tier density scale was replaced by a more precise 13-tier scale, allowing better granularity for density-based classification. Nearly 2,000 commodities were reclassified, mostly by density rather than by generic item description. This update is beneficial to shippers because the commodity listings were condensed, reducing complexity and ambiguity. Shippers that were routing freight that was denser will now be routing their freight at a lower freight class.

NMFC Code Lookup

Shippers rely on NMFC codes to accurately classify their goods for shipment. However, the NMFC system is complex and dynamic. NMFTA can update these codes multiple times a year to reflect changes in industry standards, transport technology, and other relevant factors. This dynamic nature makes it challenging for shippers to manually keep track of these changes and accurately assign the correct NMFC codes to their shipments. Likewise shippers need tools such as our free density calculator to input the dimensions and weight to determine the PCF.  After, the shipper can compare it against the PCF range to acquire the freight class.

Here’s how ViewPoint TMS makes NMFC classification simple and accurate:

  • NMFC codes readily available: ViewPoint TMS always pulls in the latest NMFC codes and updates.
  • Auto-filtering: As you enter shipment dimensions and weight, ViewPoint automatically matches each load to the correct NMFC code—no manual lookup required.
  • Bill of Lading automation: NMFC codes are auto-populated onto the BOL, reducing errors and speeding up the documentation process.
  • Compliance and cost control: With always-current data and automated freight class validation, shippers avoid misclassification, chargebacks, and billing disputes—especially critical after the July 2025 changes.

NMFC Code Technology

Partnering with a Transportation Management System (TMS) provider that offers an automated NMFC code lookup function becomes crucial to avoid reclassifications. A TMS system equipped with an automated NMFC code lookup function streamlines the process for shippers. It eliminates the need for manual searches and keeps up with the dynamic nature of NMFC updates. By utilizing a TMS with this feature, shippers ensure they consistently access the most updated NMFC codes for accurate classification, pricing, and handling of their shipments. This automation not only saves time but also minimizes the risk of errors associated with manual classification, ensuring smoother and more precise shipping operations.

NMFC Number

NMFC Number

The NMFC number is a critical identifier that holds the key to accurate freight rates. But what exactly is an NMFC number, and why should shippers prioritize accuracy in obtaining one?

At its core, the NMFC number is the linchpin of proper freight classification. It's a standardized code assigned to goods and commodities, acting as a universal language for carriers to understand the characteristics, handling requirements, and pricing associated with each item being shipped. Essentially, the NMFC number serves as a roadmap, guiding carriers in determining the appropriate shipping rates and procedures for different types of cargo.

NMFC Number

Why the emphasis on accuracy? Well, the devil is in the details. An accurate NMFC number ensures that your shipment is classified correctly based on factors such as density, stowability, handling, and liability. This classification directly impacts the freight rates you'll be charged and dictates how carriers handle your cargo. Incorrect classification can lead to overpaying or underpaying for shipping services, as well as potential issues during transit due to mismanagement based on incorrect handling guidelines.

For shippers, obtaining an accurate NMFC number isn't just a suggestion—it's a fundamental necessity. It's the difference between smooth sailing and potential hiccups in the shipping process. Ensuring accuracy in your NMFC number means you're not just getting the right pricing; you're also safeguarding your cargo against mishandling or delays caused by improper classification. Let's now investigate a TMS system function that enables you to lookup the accurate NMFC number.

Imagine a TMS system that's more than just a tool—it's your strategic ally in navigating the complexities of freight classification. Our TMS boasts an integrated density calculator and freight class calculator, setting a new standard in streamlined shipping operations. When shippers input their commodity details, the system performs magic: it automatically calculates the pounds per cubic foot (PCF) based on dimensions and weight. This precise PCF becomes the cornerstone for retrieving the most applicable NMFC codes, ensuring accurate classification for your cargo.

But that's not all—our TMS takes it a step further. Upon selecting the NMFC Code Lookup, the system populates the accurate freight class directly onto the Bill of Lading (BOL). This means no more guesswork, no more manual searches—just pinpoint accuracy, seamlessly integrated into your shipping process. And by integration, we actually mean real integration, as you can tie this TMS system to Microsoft PowerBI or your ERP to push accurate information and acquire supply chain analytics.
