Shipper Update After Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian Update

Hurricane Ian is still affecting operations in Florida as carriers continue to work through disruptions. Experts have given predictions on the upcoming Holiday season volume.

Hurricane Ian Update:

Last Wednesday Hurricane Ian reached Southwest parts of Florida, forming into a category 5 hurricane before impact. This impacted many carriers in Florida causing them to close terminals due to safety precautions. Delays may occur for shipments inbound and outbound for Florida as terminals regain normal operational status.

Industry Update – Holiday Season:

According to the article “KeyBanc warns investors of a ‘trucking winter’ amid anemic economic conditions,” it stated carriers and shippers might not see as tight of capacity as other holiday seasons. This is due to retailers stocking ahead of the peak season. This may lead to carriers and shippers not hauling as much freight during historical holiday busy seasons.

Truckload:

The national van rate spot market capacity looks looser than the contract rates from the beginning of 2022 to the beginning of October. Van rates hold steady as reefers and flatbeds decline. National average spot rates continue to decrease due to more trucks and less load postings across all modes. Spot market rates have declined 30% compared to last year. Week -over -week the spot load posts remain consistent from 26-Oct vs Sep 19-Sep 25.

Due to restoring the cities that were impacted by Hurricane Ian, the capacity for truckloads in Florida might be affected by the capacity. TLI will continually monitor updates regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

Less-Than-Truckload:

Less-than-Truckload carriers may still be operating on limited operations in affected areas of Hurricane Ian. Our team is continuing to monitor these specific terminals and will relay information to affected customers.

LTL carriers are continually working through capacity issues on a terminal, shipment, and day-to-day basis. Weekly updates/directions are given by carriers to help alleviate their terminal which may include: freight embargos, dimension/quantity restrictions, and transit delays. TLI is actively monitoring these situations and will update any affected customer with solutions.

TLI will continue to monitor situations in the industry, such as acquisitions, embargos, and other industry disruptions. If a TLI client is directly affected by any of these events, your TLI representatives will reach out to discuss what this means for your account.
