Transportation Management System

There was a time when “transportation technology” would be considered an oxymoron. Although there is still quite a way to go within this industry it’s good to see the focus and money being invested in transportation analytics, and it is encouraging to see this data getting to the executive strategic planning discussions.

Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs (Third-Party Logistics) play a significant role in transportation technology, as they are responsible for managing the movement of goods from one place to another. They provide a range of services, including warehousing, transportation, and distribution, to businesses across various industries. To ensure the efficient movement of goods, Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs have to keep up with the latest transportation technologies.

One of the latest transportation technologies that Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs are implementing is GPS tracking. GPS tracking allows Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs to monitor the movement of goods in real-time. They can track the location of the shipment, the speed of the vehicle, and any delays or detours. This technology enables Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs to provide accurate delivery estimates to their clients and proactively resolve any issues that may arise.

Another transportation technology that Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs are using is drones. Drones can be used to deliver goods to remote areas, reducing delivery times and costs. Drones can also be used to conduct inspections of warehouses and transportation vehicles, improving safety and reducing downtime.

Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs are also using automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) to optimize warehouse operations. ASRS uses robotics to move goods within a warehouse, reducing the need for human labor. This technology increases the speed and accuracy of warehouse operations, reducing the time it takes to process orders and improving customer satisfaction.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are also being used by Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs to optimize supply chain operations. AI and ML can be used to analyze data, identify trends, and make predictions. This technology enables Logistics Solution Providers and 3PLs to make informed decisions, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that having “technology” doesn’t necessarily translate to “better”. It still takes understanding and knowing how to best use the technology for optimizing your supply chain and keeping your customers better informed.

For example, what utility does a vendor non-compliance report provide, if the data is not used to enhance vendor compliance?

The value a 3PL with technology brings is knowing how to help each unique customer with data interpretation so they can succeed in growth and profitability. It’s not good enough just to harbor KPI’s & benchmarks, but rather the value is through implementing & executing projects to yield accountability and efficiency gains.
