Why Did the LTL Carrier Reweigh My Shipment?

Monique Campbell • Dec 25, 2022

Reasons for Reweighed Shipments Within the LTL Network

Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers reweigh LTL shipments for a few reasons. One of the main reasons is to ensure that the weight of the shipment is accurate. This is important because LTL carriers base their shipping rates on the weight of the shipment. If the weight of the shipment is incorrect, the carrier may end up losing money due to not filling out the trailer completely & though burning excess fuel.

Another reason why LTL carriers reweigh shipments is to ensure that the shipment is safe to transport. The weight of a shipment can affect how it is loaded onto a truck and how the truck handles on the road. An overly heavy shipment could cause the truck to be unstable and potentially lead to an accident. By reweighing the shipment, LTL carriers can make sure that it is safe to transport.

In some cases, LTL carriers may also reweigh a shipment if the customer requests it. This can be useful for customers who want to make sure that the weight of their shipment is accurate, or for customers who are unsure about the weight of their shipment and want to avoid any potential additional charges.

If an LTL carrier does find that a shipment is overweight, they may charge the customer additional fees. This is because the carrier will have to pay more to transport the shipment, and they will need to pass this cost on to the customer. In some cases, the additional fees may be quite significant, particularly if it falls under an LTL reclassification so it is important for customers to make sure that the weight of their shipment is accurate before it is shipped.

In conclusion, LTL carriers reweigh shipments for a few reasons, including to ensure that the weight of the shipment is accurate, to ensure that the shipment is safe to transport, and to avoid potential additional charges. By reweighing shipments, LTL carriers can help ensure that their customers get the best possible shipping rates and that their shipments are transported safely and securely.
