FMCSA Speed Limit Proposal Expected in December

September 26, 2023

68 mph max? FMCSA to provide limit.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) proposed on Monday September 25, 2023 a 68 mph speed limit for all heavy-duty tractor trailers before quickly rescinding the idea.

FMCSA Speed Limit Proposal

The FMCSA advised Tuesday morning that the speed limit suggestion of 68mph was still under consideration.   Initially, in their annual Department of Transportation (DOT) report which was released on Monday the suggestion was made, however after inquiries from trade groups and the media the FMCSA spokesperson Kala Write advised journalist Colin Campbell with TruckingDive that the agency removed the clause from the report as it was unofficial and requires further analysis & review prior to being proposed as a supplemental notice of rulemaking.

Kala Write specifically advised, "No decision has been made on the maximum speed limit that would be proposed in the upcoming SNPRM."  The update indicates that the FMCSA estimate they will release the rule proposal around December 29th, as they have indicated in the past

The FMCSA was provided over 15,000 public comments concerning speed limiters, and have ample data and consultant advise concerning where the limit should be.  There is ideology division concerning the speed limit as the American Trucking Association (ATA) supports a limit while the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) opposes it.
