Ways shippers can get the most out of their 3PL

3PL Accountability

Enhancing your transportation management operation requires more than partnering with a skilled third-party logistics provider (3PL). As a shipper, you’ll also need to run down a checklist of your own to ensure that you’re doing your part to take advantage of all 3PL capabilities. Double check that your business practices the four activities below to get the most out of your 3PL or new logistics solution provider:

3PL

Put your TMS to good use. Consult the system’s data and reports to aid in carrier selection, streamlining workflows and managing other processes. Use it to integrate functions to save time and improve staff productivity. A TMS can also help with:

  • Tracking shipments
  • Storing audit information
  • Mitigating claims

Schedule regular business reviews. Gather important team players and decision makers to observe which 3PL capabilities you use most, how they affect areas of your supply chain and what you think your business should focus on next. Expand upon your 3PL’s efforts by setting goals and following up on their progress.

Utilize your 3PL’s expertise. Consult their experts when making decisions concerning product roll out and warehouse placement. Their knowledge will give you the valuable foresight to better plan for product paths and estimated costs.

Leverage your 3PL’s skill set. A third party logistics team with a wide range of abilities can offer more direct services such as:

  • Auditing freight bills
  • Handling carrier service issues
  • Resolving complicated claims
  • Properly classifying freight
  • Negotiating carrier contracts
  • Tracing late or missed shipments

Does your current 3PL lack these additional capabilities or are you unsure if your team makes the most of them? Schedule a free 30-minute consultation with an expert from Translogistics to review your supply chain and gain insight on how much your current provider helps or hinders your business growth.
