Yard jockey, a skilled driver responsible for moving trailers and equipment within a shipping yard.

A yard jockey is a professional driver who operates a specialized vehicle known as a yard truck, yard dog, or shunt truck. Yard jockeys are responsible for moving trailers and other equipment within a limited area such as a warehouse, distribution center, or shipping yard. The job requires a high level of skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

The primary responsibility of a yard jockey is to move trailers between loading docks and staging areas. They are also responsible for positioning trailers for loading and unloading, and for making sure that the trailers are properly secured. Yard jockeys must be able to navigate tight corners, narrow aisles, and other obstacles in the yard while operating their vehicle safely.

In addition to moving trailers, yard jockeys are also responsible for performing routine maintenance on their vehicles, such as checking tire pressure and oil levels. They must also be able to communicate effectively with other drivers, warehouse workers, and supervisors to ensure that all operations are running smoothly and efficiently.

Yard jockeys must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) and have a clean driving record. They must also have a good understanding of safety regulations and be able to follow all safety protocols. They may be required to work long hours, weekends, and holidays, as shipping and distribution centers often operate 24/7.

While yard jockey positions do not typically require formal education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, some employers may prefer candidates who have completed vocational or technical training in commercial driving or related fields. Prior experience working as a truck driver, delivery driver, or warehouse worker can also be beneficial.

The job of a yard jockey can be physically demanding, as drivers may be required to climb in and out of their vehicles frequently and perform tasks such as hooking and unhooking trailers. However, the job can also be rewarding, as it offers opportunities for career advancement and a competitive salary.

In summary, a yard jockey is a professional driver who operates a specialized vehicle within a limited area such as a warehouse, distribution center, or shipping yard. The job requires a high level of skill, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Yard jockeys must possess a valid CDL and have a good understanding of safety regulations. While the job can be physically demanding, it offers opportunities for career advancement and a competitive salary.
